Debidas Bhattacharyya (1960–2020) was an acclaimed Indian filmmaker and one of the few great masters of world television, celebrated for his deeply humanistic storytelling approach to series. Working primarily in Bengali, the language of West Bengal and Bangladesh, Bhattacharyya created television series that captured the essence of everyday life with rare sensitivity and authenticity. Over the span of his illustrious career, he directed numerous acclaimed mega-serials and telefilms, earning recognition for his commitment to artistic integrity and emotional depth. He was the recipient of multiple Best Director Awards, most notably for MAA and EKTII KURIR GALPO.

Biography

Debidas Bhattacharyya was born on November 2, 1960, into a humble Pandit family in Basirhat, South 24 Parganas, India. His grandfather, Pandit Bhabanicharan Bhattacharyya, was the founder of a Sanskrit Tol and later laid the foundation of Basirhat High School — marking the family’s long-standing contribution to education and culture in the region.

With the success of Pratiksha Ektoo Bhalobasar, Debidas Bhattacharyya went on to create a remarkable legacy in Bengali television. He directed a series of successful and critically acclaimed serials and telefilms, each marked by his trademark emotional depth and meticulous craftsmanship.
